Wien / Fassadenstatuen des Naturhistorisches Museums

Description

The Naturhistorisches Museum was built 1872-1881 after the design of Gottfried Semper (Hamburg 1803-Rome 1879) and Carl von Hasenauer (Wien 1833-Wien 1894). The outer four façades were adorned with numerous statues, heads and reliefs were, representing the scientific progress and symbolizing the forces of nature.

The ensemble of sculptures is a continuous outline of the history of the physical worldview:

  1. Central avant-corps: sculpture groups representing two continents (the others are on the back avant corps), on the first floor allegorical groups in niches, in the second floor busts in roundels and at the top under a cupola.
  2. The first floor of the central avant corps and side avant corpses: 10 statues in niches: devoted to the discoveries and the events of the world, indicating that have suddenly expanded the horizon of observation and knowledge.
  3. On the balustrades: 34 statues, a chronological sequence of statues of great men.
  4. Above the windows of the second floor, directly beneath the roof: 64 heads of great men, whose names are in between the windows of the first and second floors.
