Annotation

On the north side of the Castillo de San Marcos is the tiny Plaza Juan de la Cosa, where this companion of Columbus and first cartographer of the New World is commemorated with two memorials: A bust and an azulejo showing his world map of 1500.

Other bronzes by Cristina Carreño of Juan de la Cosa (identical to this one?) is in the Museo Colón in Valladolid, in Santander and in Santona.

The azulejo is protected by a plexiglass covering. That was necessary, since it was not spared by graffiti "artists" either.
