Around 1994 the Greater Rockford Columbus Day Committee decided that they should have a memorial of some kind. Shirley Martignoni Fedeli, together with her husband chairmen of this committee, wrote me: " Being a teacher, I wanted to have a contest where Jr. and high school/college kids could draw or design a monument. But the powers that be thought that an adult committee of the CDC should plan it. So we have a 6 ft. granite monument with the head of Columbus on it. It also has the organization (CDC) mentioned plus the date."
