Description

The Arkadenhof (Arcaded courtyard) of the university forms the center of the main building of the University of Vienna. The architect Heinrich von Ferstel planned the communication paths of this monumental building in such a way that the arcades would become the central interface to all parts of the building and thus would be the communicative centerpiece. In collaboration with his adviser, the art historian Rudolf von Eitelberger, Ferstel developed the idea of designing this highly frequented space as a place of remembrance to the most important scholars and scientists. In June 1885, the Academic Senate decided to honor these scholars and scientists with busts and plaques.

Since the erection of the first monument for Julius Glaser in 1888, 160 other monuments were erected. The first monuments were placed gradually at the wall of the left arcade. In the rear arcade, monuments were erected between 1918 and 1932. The installation of portrait reliefs on the pillars of the arcades began between 1900 and 1913 and continued from 1945 onwards. Between 1956 and 1970, seven portrait reliefs were affixed to the pillar inner sides. A caesura in the erection of monuments is the Nazi period, since between 1938 and 1945 monuments were damaged, removed and then stored in depots. These were restored after the war and placed in their original place.

However, until 2016 not a single woman has been honored for her scientific achievements in the Arkadenhof of the University of Vienna. The only monument for a woman was that for the writer Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, and was placed because she was the first woman to get a degree of doctor of philosophy, honoris causa, of the university of Vienna. Her monument is however the first and until 1998 the only monument without a portrait.

On the occasion of the 650th anniversary in 2015, a project for individual honoring of female scientists at the University of Vienna was launched and an art competition was called out. Three artists (Baumann, Bolt and Frank) were selected to made seven new monuments which were unveiled on 30 June 2016.

In the arcades around the courtyard of the University are 161 busts, plaques, reliefs and one statue of scholars and scientist. The numbers in the list refer to the work by Maisel of 2007. The new monunents of 2016 are of course not in this book, and have got 'A' numbers.

Before 2016 there were 154 monuments, 152 for men, 1 for a woman (no. 133, without portrait) and 1 for a group (no. 123). Since 2016 there are 152 monuments for men, 8 for women and one for a group.

Depicted are persons of the following disciplines (according to the 'Tätigkeit' column in the list at u:monuments):

34 of the depicted professor have been rector of the university.
