Helsinki / Ateneumin julkisivuveistokset

Description

The Ateneum building was designed by the architect Theodor Höijer and completed in 1887. It was originally built for the art schools and collections of the Fine Arts Association of Finland and the Finnish Handicrafts and Applied Arts Organization.

Execution of the façade's decoration was commissioned from sculptor Carl Eneas Sjöstrand. In the triangular tympanum, the Goddess of Art is holding wreaths above the symbols of the fine and the applied arts. The tympanum is supported by four caryatids, or female allegorical figures representing:

  1. Sculpture.
  2. Painting
  3. Geometry
  4. Architecture.
