mythical Greek king of Thebes; tragic hero who accidentally fulfilled the prophecy, that he would end up killing his father and marrying his mother, thereby bringing disaster to his city and family. When the truth was discovered, his wife-mother hanged herself, and Oedipus gouged out his own eyes

Description

Bronze statue of Oedipus just after he has blinded himself with brooches from his mother's gown. The sculptress was inspired by a performance of Sophocles' tragedy Oedipus Rex in Athens.
