Annotation

An article in the Liverpool Mercury of 12 June 1875 describes the statue:

Charles o'r Bala. - A public statue of the late Rev. Thomas Charles, B.A., of Bala, one of the founders of the British and Foreign Bible Society and Sunday schools in Wales, executed in Sicillan marble by Mr. W. Davies, Mynorydd, London, has been erected at Bala, and is to be unveiled on Thursday next, the 17th instant. The intention in the statue is to represent Mr. Charles attired in his Geneva preaching gown, as though uttering the following sentence: "From my heart I wish all men to have the Bible." This was the ruling idea of his life, as was evinced -1. By his preaching the gospel to enormous congregations with a power seldom equalled; 2, by his exertions in the founding of that great institution, the British and Foreign Bible Society; 3, by his promoting the establishment of Sunday schools throughout Wales; 4, by his writings, especialiy his "Geiriadur Ysgrythyrol" (Biblical Dictionary), published in two large volumes. To express this ruling idea in the statue, he is represented pressing one hand to his heart, and with the other offering a Bible. The statue is 7 feet high, marble pedestal 8 feet, with a bas relief of Mr. Charles instructing a class placed on front panel.

Thomas Charles was the grandfather of Lewis Edward's wife Jane and of Edward's brother-in-law David Charles who founded the theological college in Bala with Edwards.
