Description

35 foot flag pole in the center of a pool of water [now filled with plants] surrounded by a granite bench. The water feature was to remind of the words of President Dwight Eisenhower, upon placing the Medal of Honor around Raymond "Jerry" Murphy's neck, and carved in the edge of the bench:

"what is it
something in the water out here in pueblo?
all you guys turn out to be heroes!"
president dwight d. eisenhower oct 27, 1953

Around the flagpole stand four more than lifesize statues of Pueblo Medal of Honor recipients. On the granite pedestals of the statues are the name and rank of the soldier, the medal of honor citation, and on the back side a map of the area where he fought and a depiction of his medals. The statues are of:

Annotation

The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government. It is bestowed on members of the United States armed forces who distinguish themselves "conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his or her life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States." Due to the nature of its criteria, it is often awarded posthumously (more than half have been since 1941).
