this bronze was commissioned by the board of directors of the southwestern
exposition and livestock show and dedicated as part of its centennial celebration.
john justin, born january 17, 1917 in nocona, texas, grew up working in the justin
boot company factory which was founded by his grandfather in 1879 at spanish fort,
texas on the chisholm trail. after attending texas christian university he started
the justin belt company. he returned to the boot business in 1949 and three years
later became justin boot company president. in 1968 the justin boot, belt and
leather good companies merged with acme brick company to form justin industries,
today a public company.
john justin was elected to the board of directors of the southwestern exposition
and livestock show in 1959. he was elected chairman of the board in 1982. under
his leadership the stock show and the city of fort worth provided over forty five
million dollars in new facilities for the will rogers memorial center.
justin was mayor pro-tem of the fort worth city council in 1959 and 1960 and
served as mayor from 1961 to 1963 constantly promoting and preserving fort worth's
western heritage. he is known and admired around the western world and received
numerous honors including the cowboy hall of fame, pro rodeo hall of fame, texas
business hall of fame and the charles goodnight award.
justin, on his favorite mount "baby blue", participated in every fort worth rodeo
grand entry for many years, because of his dedication and leadership as mayor,
chairman of justin industriesk, and chairman of the southwestern exposition and
livestock show, this bronze is appropriately styled "the chairman"
