Statues - Hither & Thither

 

Beschreibung / Description

On the corners of the base are four statues representing the four ages. In addition, they symbolize the influence of the poet to all groups of people:

1. Childhood: Mother with baby.
2. Youth: Young man with the walking stick.
3. Adult: happy working citizen - iron worker.
4. Old Age: old man with a book in his hands.

On the faces of the base are four high reliefs (almost statues), with below medallions with appropriate symbol:

5. Poetry, a winged youth with a torch. In the medallion Pegasus.
6. Drama, a woman with a lyra. In the medallion a tragic and satyric mask.
7. Epica, a woman with long hair. In the medallion a pelican.
8. Wisdom, a woman with a mirror and behind her a child?. In the medallion Pallas Athena with the owl.

• Johannes Schilling (Mitweida 1828 - Dresden 1910), German sculptor, his portrait is on the Fürstenzug (Wikipedia).
