Sculpure of a shepherd and his dog with a herd of sheep.
'Schapekoppen' (sheep heads) is the nickname for the inhabitants of Lier. Legend has it that, in the 14th century, Duke John II of Brabant wanted to reward the people of Lier for their assistance in his fight against the city of Mechelen. He gave them the choice between the rights to have a University or a cattle market. Lier chose to have a cattle market and as a result the first Belgian university went to Leuven instead. The Duke is to have said 'Oh, those sheep heads!'
