The hill with the calvary is the twelfth station, but also the central point, of the Stations of the Cross in Moresnet-Chapelle park. The Way of the Cross was built between 1896 and 1904 on the initiative of Father Johannes Ruiter (1846-1915). The sculptures of the Stations of the Cross were provided by sculptor Piedboeuf from Aachen. The Calvary consisted of four statues, the crucified Jesus, Mary, John and Mary Magdalene, which were soon supplemented by the two crucified murderers and a centurion.
The three crucified of the 12th station had suffered damage over time. Father Franciscan Laurentius Englisch, an artist-sculptor, replaced the old statues in French stone with works of art in bronze in 1981. By 2007, the crosses had suffered the same kind of ageing, they were removed and replaced in a spectacular fashion under the guidance of Guido Dôme.
