Description

Deze fontein werd in 1852 opgericht ter ere van de eerste Belgische koningin, Louise-Marie d’Orléans, die in 1832 met Leopold I en in 1850 stierf. De architect was Charles Vanderstraeten, die zich nogal inspireren door de fontein op de Place de la Concorde in Parijs. Volgens de originele plannen zou er bovenaan een beeld van de koningin komen, dit nooit gerealiseerd.
Op de centrale zuil zijn drie ronde plaquettes, een met de opdracht aan de koning, een met het wapen van België met daarboven de 'bril' van Oudenaarde (naar een oud volksverhaal, zie hier) en een met een koninklijke zegel(?).

This fountain was erected in 1852 in honour of the first Belgian queen, Louise-Marie d'Orléans, who married Leopold I in 1832 and died in 1850. The architect was Charles Vanderstraeten, who was quite inspired by the fountain in the Place de la Concorde in Paris. According to the original plans, there was to be a statue of the queen at the top, this never realised.
On the central pillar are three round plaques, one with the dedication to the king, one with the coat of arms of Belgium with the ‘glasses’ of Oudenaarde above it (after an old folk tale, see here) and one with a royal seal(?).
