ĽUDOVÍT ŠTÚR

Born 29 October 1815 in Uhrovec,
died 12 January 1856 in Modra.
On this island, in 1848, the memorable Slav
Congress was held, at which Ľudovít Štúr,
as the representative of the Slovaks, proclaimed the idea of
Slavic solidarity. Here he spoke these historic
words: "Our aim should not be to preserve the Austrian
Empire. Our aim is to preserve ourselves. We must first
serve ourselves, and only then others. Until now Austria
has endured while we have perished. What would the world say
of us if we cared for nothing except the preservation of Austria?
With the fall of Austria, we do not fall."
Štúr was already preparing what was accomplished only
through the World War. Dedicated to Slavic Prague on the occasion
of the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of Štúr's appearance
at the Congress by the Slovak student associations in Prague Detvan,
Považan and Janošík Circle, together with the Czechoslovak
Unity Society and the Central Štúr Jubilee Committee
in Bánovce, 1936.
