Description

Statue of Antonín Dvořák.
The statue has an exceptionally long and complicated history. In 1931, the Association for the Erection of a Monument to Antonín Dvořák was founded. No competition was held for the monument, and the commission for the statue was entrusted to Josef Wagner in 1955. The Central National Committee decided that the monument should be situated in front of the Rudolfinum, where Dvořák had worked. In 1957, Josef Wagner died, and with him the original grand idea of a sculptural group comprising several figures was abandoned. The monument fell into obscurity for a time; In 1988, a new competition was launched for the monument; having considered the submitted designs, it was decided to return to Wagner’s original design, which was available only as a model. Wagner’s son, Jan Wagner, was commissioned to enlarge the model and produce the sculpture itself. The monument was unveiled during the Prague Spring festival in 2000..
