The with the plague column was erected as a token of gratitude for the 1680 plague disease having subsided. The figure of St Joseph was commissioned by the New Town Magistrate and created between 1697 and 1698 by the Lusatian sculptor and woodcarver Mat?j Václav Jäckel, who was working in Bohemia at the time.
