Description

Baroque sandstone sculpture of Saint Joseph holding the infant Jesus in his arms, flanked by four cherubs. On the front is the coat of arms of Nové Město, whilst the capitals feature the Habsburg eagle with the monogram of Emperor Leopold I, as well as the Czech and Hungarian coats of arms. The statue is on the top of a column comprising four combined half-columns with Pseudo-Corinthian capitals. The column rests on a plinth featuring four water spouts in the shape of lions’ heads and stands in the center of a polygonal water basin.

The with the plague column was erected as a token of gratitude for the 1680 plague disease having subsided. The figure of St Joseph was commissioned by the New Town Magistrate and created between 1697 and 1698 by the Lusatian sculptor and woodcarver Mat?j Václav Jäckel, who was working in Bohemia at the time.
