Description

The early Baroque church building, with its richly decorated façade and tower, was built between 1665 and 1699 in several stages as part of the Jesuit college.
The façade is topped by a statue of St. Ignatius in a halo, with the gilded initials AMDG on his chest (Ad maiorem Dei gloriam, the motto of the Jesuit Order). The tympanum bears the Latin inscription: MaJorI DeI gLorIÆ et sanCtI IgnazII honorI pIÆtas ereXit (For the greater glory of God and in honour of Saint Ignatius, piety erected), chronogram for 1671. The portico features eight statues of Jesuit saints surrounding Christ the Saviour, created by the workshop of M. V. Jäckel, was added in 1699.
