Statues - Hither & Thither

 

Description

3.5-metre-high statue of the President Wilson with outstretched arms. This gesture is modelled on his appearance at the 1919 Versailles Peace Conference, when the President rose from his chair and, with outstretched arms, symbolically blessed the new nations of Europe.

The original monument was a gift from Americans of Czech and Slovak origin. It was officially unveiled on 4 July 1928 as part of the celebrations marking the tenth anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia.

On 5 October 2011, a replica of the original 3.5-metre-tall statue was erected in front of the Main Station building in Vrchlického sady (seventy years after it was toppled by the Germans). It was created by Václav Frýdecký, Michal Blažek and Daniel Talavery. The President of the Republic, Václav Havel, attended the ceremonial unveiling.

The plinth bears the inscription 'WOODROW WILSON. Four steps lead up to the plinth. The front edge of the two upper step bear the inscriptions:
