Čeněk Vosmík & 19th century sculptor
1898 |

The construction of the Chucht of Saint Barbara (also called cathedral) began in the year 1388, but was interrupted on several occasions. As a result of the Hussite Wars, work was halted for more than 60 years, until 1482. In 1588, construction had to be halted due to a lack of funds, with the result that the church was covered with a temporary partition wall. The final phase of construction lasted from 1884 to 1905. The western front was then rebuilt according to the design of Josef Mocker and was completed in 1898. Many of the statues and architectural sculptures are 19th-century replacements, even though they are now regarded as an integral part of the church. They were made in the stonemasons' workshop of Josef Uzel by, amongst others, Jindřich Václav Čapek, Čeněk Vosmík and Jan Kastner
