Description

This satue of T. G. Masaryk, first Czechoslovak president, is the third one on this spot. Twice it was hauled away and melted down by occupying powers. The original by sculptor Karel Dvořák and architect Pavel Janák — was unveiled on 27 October 1938, the twentieth anniversary of the founding of the Republic. Already in June 1940 the statue was removed by the German occupation administration and in July 1942 melted down.
A new statue was unveiled on 27 October 1948 on the initiative of Reverend Jan Dus of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren. Under the Communist regime it was in January 1959 removed and stored in the depot of the local museum, and was melted down in 1964/1956.
The current statue was unveiled on 27 October 1991 by Kutná Hora mayor Jaroslav Benda. The statue was again cast by Miloslav Smrkovský and Petr Krámek according to a preserved plaster copy of the original. It was placed on the original pedestal, which was found in the depot of the city technical services.
