Description
Over 46 meters (150 feet) high column, with a statue of the Roman goddess Victoria, standing on a sphere.
The sculpture of Victoria was created by sculptor August Hengst and the coppersmiths Conrad and Franz Beckmann and various 'helpers'. The artist's signature 'Hengst' is locted in a robe crease near the left foot of the sculpture. There, a separately mounted panel informs also of further details.
The column is a design of the architect Laves, who also designed the Waterlooplatz.
The base of the column has on the front the text:
DEN SIEGERN VON WATERLOO
DAS DANKBARE VATERLAND
and a door with the Hanoverian coat of arms. On the three other sides are tablets with names of the 'Königlich Deutsche Legion' and the 'K&o246;niglich Hannoversche Truppen'.
