Concrete pillar with a hole in the top. On the top stands a dachshund and in the hole is a bell with the coat-of-arms of Buxtehude.

Inscription(s)

in buxtehude, einer stadt mit niederländischen siedlern,
wurden glocken schon mit dem seil geläutet, als sie
woanders noch mit dem hammer angeschlagen wurden.
die glocken wurden hunde genannt und das seil sah schon
bald wie ein schwanz aus, so wurde das läuten zum bellen.
und deshal bellen heute in buxtehude die hunde
mit dem schwanz.

In Buxtehude, a town with Dutch settlers,
the bells were rung with a rope, while
elsewhere they were still struck with a hammer.
The bells were called dogs and the rope soon looked
like a tail, so that ringing became barking.
and therefore today the dogs in Buxtehude bark
with their tail.

Annotation

The story that the dogs bark with their tail is a German word game: to bark is in Germen 'bellen', and a bell is in German 'Glocke'. The reference to the Dutch settlers is not quite clear.
