Description

Sandstone sculptures on the west portal of the north side. On two projecting pillars to the right and left of the portal, the Annunciation and in two niches immediately next to the portal St. Gotthard and Bishop Bernward with Epiphanius.

St. Gotthard of Hildesheim (Reichersdorf bei Niederalteich 960 - Hildesheim 1038), bishop of Hildesheim, 1022-1038 (Wikipedia).
Around his staff a ribbon with inscription "ex te nascetur filius dei ui" (From you will be born the Son of the living God), and in front of him kneels a donor with a ribbon "[m]ater dei uiui miserere mei" (Mother of the living God, have mercy on me). Below the statue the inscription "S godehardus".

Bishop Bernward (with bishop's staff), (c. 960 - Hildesheim 1022), bishop of Hildesheim, 993-1022 (Wikipedia); and St. Epiphanius of Pavia (438-496), bishop of Pavia and patron saint of Hildesheim Wikipedia); he holds and text ribbon "Bta. que. credidisti. uirgo. maria" (Blessed are you, Virgin Mary, who believed). Below the statue the inscription "S Bernwardus / S Epyphanius".
