Description

Male torso and head.
The sculpture consists of the remains of the former war memorial in Herzberg. The sculpture is a symbol against violence and destruction. The torso is the surviving part of the memorial originally dedicated in Herzberg on 25 November 1928. The names of over 400 Peie soldiers who died in the First World War were engraved on the stone pillars. In the night of 19 to 20 June 1934, the memorial was toppled from its pedestal by unknown - presumably National Socialist - perpetrators. The sculpture was controversial, as the pose of the 'crouching man' did not correspond to the National Socialist world view of heroism.
