Statue of St. Matthias and at the same time of Mathas Bonse, the founder of the Mathias-Spital. At the right foot are the stones and the axe, the attributes of the saint. In his left hand the statue holds the Mathias-cross, the symbol of the Mathas Hospital.

Der Kaufmann Mathias Bonse in Rheine ist der Gründer der Mathias Stiftung, die im Kreis Steinfurt und im nahegelegenen Emsland mehrere Einrichtungen der Gesundheitsfürsorge betreibt. Sein Namenspatron ist der Apostel Matthias.
In der Figur an der Fassade gegenüber der Stadtkirche hat der Künstler Werner Brüning beide Personen verarbeitet. Die Beziehung des Katholiken Bonse zur Stadtkirche, seiner Person zum Stiftungsauftrag und die Bedeutung der Mathias-Stiftung bis heute hat der Künstler gestalterisch in die Bronzefigur einfließen lassen.
Die Figur des Heiligen, der auch oft als Bischof dargestellt wird, ist in Rheine bewusst ohne Mitra und Stab dargestellt, um auch das Wesen des Bürgers Bonse mit aufzunehmen. Trotzdem weisen die Attribute Beil und Steine am rechten Fuß auf Leben und Sterben des Apostels hin. Sein rechter Arm zeigt aufwärts in Richtung der Stadtkirche - zwischen Kirch-dach und Himmel - zum Kreuz auf dem Dach des Kirchendaches.
Mathias Bonse und der Heilige empfingen ihre Kraft durch den Glauben, durch den Gekreuzigten. Sein linker Arm ist auf die Erde gerichtet, dorthin, wo beide ihren Glauben in die Tat umsetzten. Um den Bezug auf die Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter der Stiftung zu setzen hat die Figur in der linken Hand das Symbol der Stiftung, ein besonders gestaltetes Kreuz, das als Logo der Stiftung bereits bekannt ist. So schließt sich der Kreis vom Kreuz auf der Stadtkirche hin zum Kreuz der Stiftung.

The merchant Mathias Bonse in Rheine is the founder of the Mathias Foundation, which runs several healthcare facilities in the Steinfurt district and nearby Emsland. Its patron saint is the apostle Matthias.
In the figure on the façade opposite the town church, the artist Werner Brüning has incorporated both figures. The artist has incorporated the relationship of the Catholic Bonse to the town church, his person to the foundation's mission and the significance of the Mathias Foundation to this day into the bronze figure.
The figure of the saint, who is also often portrayed as a bishop, is deliberately depicted in Rheine without a mitre and staff in order to capture the character of the citizen Bonse. Nevertheless, the attributes of axe and stones on his right foot refer to the life and death of the apostle. His right arm points upwards towards the town church - between the church roof and the sky - towards the cross on the roof of the church.
Mathias Bonse and the saint received their strength through faith, through the Crucified One. His left arm is directed towards the earth, to where they both put their faith into practice. To emphasise the reference to the foundation's employees, the figure is holding the foundation's symbol in its left hand, a specially designed cross, which is already known as the foundation's logo. This closes the circle from the cross on the town church to the cross of the foundation.
