Essen / Jahrhundertbrunnen   Essen / Jahrhundertbrunnen

Description

Fountain with as a centerpiece a dominating colossal figure in the form of a seated worker with a mallet, symbolizing work as such. To the left and right of the worker are niches with putti, with above them on the left the Essen city coat of arms with the year 1802 and on the right the coat of arms of Prussia with the year 1902. In the keystone of these niches is a text, designed by Hans Niemeyer: Rüstig zur arbiet – froh in der rast (Ready for work - happy to rest).
The reason for erecting the fountain was the commemoration of 100 years of the unification of the city and abbey of Essen with the Kingdom of Prussia in 1802.
