In the front of the pedestal is the Maiden of Finland, wrapped in a bearskin. In her left hand, she holds a table with the words of the Finnish national Maamme, originally a poem by Johan Ludvig Runeberg in Swedish, Vårt Land (the first, the tenth and last verse). In her right hand she has a laurel wreath, and a pile of books lies by her feet.
VÅRT LAND.
vårt land, vårt land, vårt fosterland, —
o land, du tusen sjöars land, —
din blomning, sluten än i knopp, |
OUR LAND
Our land, our land, our Fatherland! —
Oh land, the thousand lakes' own land, —
Thy blossom, hidden now from sight, |
