In 1983, the Corsican historian Lucien Saladini states that Columbus was born in Calvi, Corsica, which at that time belonged to Genoa. Thus he called himself "genoese". In 1992, two memorials for Columbus were unveiled in Calvi: this plaque, claiming Columbus was born somewhere in the pile of stones just behind it, and on another spot in town a bust of Columbus.
