The Rhône and the Saône

Description

Relief of two swimming figures representing the rivers Rhône and Saôe, located at the stairs to the stock exchange / chamber of commerce. The Rhône, represented as a muscular and naked man, swims in tormented waves. The Saône, a 'weak woman' (at least, smaller and more slender than him), seems to drown and touches the chest with her right hand.

Artist

André-César Vermare (Lyon 1869 - Île de Bréhat 1949), French sculptor. His statue 'Jeanne d'Arc au sacre' was by Pope Pius X in 1909 appointed as the offical statue for the beatification of Jeanne d'Arc. The marble statue was placed in the French national church in Rome. Many factories made replicas of the statue, usually in plaster (Wikipedia).
