Statues - Hither & Thither

 

Description

The Église Saint Bonaventure is the only medieval building not demolished after the creation of the rue Impériale (now rue de la République), under the Second Empire. The three statues on the tympanum and the façade are however from 1863 and 1905 resprectively.

Saint Bonaventure born Giovanni di Fidanza, (Bagnoregio 1221 - Lyon 1274) Franciscan, scholastic theologian and philosopher, Cardinal Bishop of Albano (Wikipedia). On a shield the initials SB and the dates 1221-1274. Signed: m. metra, 1905.

Saint Antoine de Padoue / Saint Anthony of Padua born Fernando Martins de Bulhões, (Lisbon c. 1195 - Padua 1231), priest and friar of the Franciscan Order, known for his preaching and expert knowledge of scripture (Wikipedia). On a shield the initials SA and the dates 1195-1231. Signed: m......tra, 1905.
