On the grounds of Lincoln Castle circular plaques are set into the paths which give information about people connected with the castle, their names, dates, a short note and a relevant illustration.
We photographed four of those in the footpath along the northeastern wall.
![]() EDWARD MONTAGU, EARL OF MANCHESTER 1602-1671 During the English Civil War, Montagu commanded the Parliamentarian army that laid siege to Lincoln Castle. The Royalists launched 'michty stones' at the attackers from the castle walls. The four-day siege ended on 6 May 1644, with over 900 Royalists captured of killed. The victorious Parliamentrian soldiers rampaged through the upper city, smashing momuments and stained glass in the cathedral. |

![]() SIR FRANCIS KANE 1611-1681 During the English Civil War Sir Francis was the Royalist commander of the castle when the Parliamentarians laid siege to Lincoln on 3-6 May 1644. Initially, heavy rain and mud made the steeply sloped mound below the castle walls too slippery to climb. However, the Parliamentarians eventually scaled the walls with ladders and overwhelmed the small Royalist force within. Sir Francis was taken prisoner. |
![]() PHILP BALL Pub landlord 1830s-1840s As landlord of the Strugglers Inn, which still stands below the castle walls on Westgate, Ball extended his land by digging out a section of the castle mound. His reckless excavations uncovered the Roman West Gate, which then collapsed, undermining the safety of the walls. He was sent to Lincoln Castle debtors' prison when he refused to pay for the damage. |
From various websites we found the following plaques (the one in bold are photographed by us):
