The statue commemorates the civilians in Liverpool and Bootle who lost their lives in the bombing of the city between 1940 and 1942. The local artist, Tom Murphy, draws our attention to the young mother holding her baby while trying to persuade her young son, playing with his aeroplane, to come back down the stairs to safety. The names of those who died are inscribed on scrolls placed in the base of the sculpture. In discussions with the Rector of Liverpool, it was agreed that the memorial should stand in the churchyard, overlooking the river whose docks were the principal reason for such intensive bombing. The statue was unveiled by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh on 7 July 2000. A copy of the Service of Thanksgiving and Dedication together with a list of the civilians in Liverpool and Bootle who lost their lives due to enemy action during World War II are held in the church archives. |
