Sculpture of a mourning young man (a sailor?) with a laurel wreath. The pedestal is a ship's bow with the name derbyshire, on the sides are the names of the 44 casualties of the MV Derbyshire.

MV DERBYSHIRE MV Derbyshire was an Oil-Bulk Carrier owned by Bibby Tankers Ltd of Liverpool, registered in Liverpool. On July 11th 1980, she left Sept-Iles in Canada bound for Japan, loade with 157,447 tonnes of Iron Ore. On Tuesday 9th September 1980, a last message was received from the MV Derbyshire 'Now hove to due to severe tropical storm'. The vessel was lost late that evening in Typhoon Orchid with the loss of 44 lives, 42 cres and 2 wives. In 1983 the 'MV Derbyshire Family Association' was formed. In 1994, following moves initiated by the Family Association and its supporters, the wreck was found. THe Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott ordered the re-opening of the formal investigation into the loss of the ship. In the Public Report published in 200, the Court recommendet 22 safety-enhancing measures, which if history is to be our guide, will have already preserved many lives.
