Description

One of a number of plaques and tablets attached to the Portland stone walls of a square plinth. The Lancastria plaque is the only one with an illustration.

Inscription(s)

HMT LANCASTRIA
The Lancastria was sunk by enemy action
near the French port of St Nazaire
whilst evacuating British servicemen,
crew and civilians on the
17th June 1940
Considered to be the worst disaster
in British maritime history.
There were just 2,477 survivors.
It is thought that as many as 6,000
people lost their lives. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

Oh hear us when we cry to Thee, for thos in peril in the sea
