The Walker Art Gallery was designed by local architects Cornelius Sherlock and H. H. Vale, and was opened on 6 September 1877 by Edward Henry Stanley, 15th Earl of Derby.
On the roof is a statue Spirit of Liverpool; the entrance is flanked by marble statues of Michelangelo and Raphael. There are three friezes showing four royal visits to Liverpool.
