lord bishop of chichester.
he was born at
cuckney in nottinghamshire, a.d. 1768,
and educated at jesus college, cambridge,
of which society he became fellow
and senior tutor a.d. 1796.
he married a.d. 1804, nancy sadlier,
the daugher of william bruere, esquire,
and from that time
was engaged in the faithful discharge
of parochial and clerical duties.
he was appointed the first principal
of king's college, london, a.d. 1830,
and by his wisdom and learning
greatly promoted
the prosperity of that institution.
on the 2nd october, a.d. 1836, he was
consecrated bishop of this see.
the establishment of the
diocesan associatio,
of the theological college,
of the training school for masters,
and the restoration of
the rural chapters to their ancient use
throughout the diocese,
are records of his episcopal care
he died 20th august 1840.
