Annotation
The Royal Military Canal was built by soldiers of the Royal Staff Corps. But the hard work was done by the navvies of 'navigators' - the working men who travelled the country to labour on the building of the new canal network. The first soil of the Royal Military Canal was turned on 30 October 1804. The sculpture commemorates the lives of the navvies who worked here. Their clothes and tools are typical of working men of about 1805.
