THE CENTRE - MARGATE
CENTRAL SCULPTURE FEATURE
The sculpture represents Tethys, Goddess
of the Oceans in Greek mythology, rising
from the waters and wreckage of the old
pier to symbolize continuity of strength in
activities on teh seas in face of adversity.
     Tethys was the wife of Oceanus
who ruled the oceans.
     Their marriage brought forth all
the gods and nymphs of the rivers, lakes
and deas including three thousand daughters,
the Oceanids, whose duty it was to look
after all the waters covering the earth,
and who, under Apollo's supervision, also had
charge of all the young men in their
domain whom they protected until they were
fully grown.
