General Charles C. Gordon c.b. this statue is dedicated to the memory ofGeneral Gordon who so faithfully served the poor of this borough between the years 1865 to 1871 together with his modernisation of New Tavern Fort and other forts along the Thames he is best remembered for his generositt and his struggle to give the benefits of education to the poor of this town. General Gordon was murdered during the siege of Khartoum and departed this life 26th january 1885. r.i.p. |
