In 1914, on the occasion of the unveiling of the Wilson statue in Cheltenham, the editor of the Cheltenham Looker-on looked for other sculptures:
Have you Noticed It? There is another Cheltenham statue that has occupied prominent position in what was once known the Imperial Gardens, and now as the Winter Gardens, since 1833. It will be news to most people that it represents William IV. and was erected in the year mentioned to commemorate the passing the Reform Bill. It has its career had an occasional coat of paint once it appeared in a coat of many colours, like Joseph's. I have reason to believe that it was for many years without a nose and that a one-time manager of the Winter Gardens modelled one of putty and glued it on, and it remains to this day.
