Description
Stone obelisk, with on one of the sides of the pedestal a bronze relief portrait. The monument was designed by Mr John Gibbs of London and Leamington. A newspaper article of the inauguration of the memorial says it was a representation of the Byzantine School of architecture, and that it was made by a local townsman in Shrewsbury - a Mr Dodson, of the Swan Hill Monumental works.

The obelisk was originally placed on the square in front of the railway station. Unveiled 14 June 1874.
