Judith and Holofernes

Holofernes was an Assyrian general who was about to destroy Judith's home, the city of Bethulia. Overcome with drink, he passes out and is decapitated by Judith. The account of the beheading of Holofernes by Judith is given in the deuterocanonical Book of Judith

Description

Scupture depicting the beheading of the Assyrian general Holofernes by Judith. It is remarkable for being one of the first Renaissance sculptures to be conceived in the round, with its four distinct faces. Judith Beheading Holofernes, depicting the climax of the story in the biblical Book of Judith was a common subject in art, and part of the Power of Women topos.
