Summary of this article:
The installation of the fountain with the sculpture of the Dwarf in one of the central squares in Kaunas city is a unique phenomenon in Lithuanian and a rare one in global context.
The paper aims to describe the position of the fountain in the Solidarity square (Vienybės aikštė), its structure (the sculpture of the Dwarf is discussed in detail), history, values in the perspective of the preservation of cultural heritage, the relation of the sculpture with the space of the square and its place in the city context.
The author attempts to give a hermeneutical context analysis which reveals the semantic meanings encoded in the sculpture of the Dwarf and its role in the ideological programme of the square, thus opening up allusions to the inter-war atmosphere of Kaunas as the cultural centre of Lithuania.
With respect to the cultural heritage protection, the Dwarf-fountain is an important object, which demonstrates a complex cultural (historical and artistic) and social significance. From the very moment of the Dwarf's 'arrival' in Kaunas, it became an important 'dweller' and one of the symbols of Kaunas - an inherent element of the Solidarity square and the city itself.
