Praça Pe. João Lourenço Rocha

Padre João Lourenço Rocha nasceu a 2 de Fevereiro de 1834 na
Freguesia das Doze Ribeiras. Cursou no Liceu de Angra do
Heroísmo, estudou Teologia Dogmática e moral, e História
Eclesiástica, concluindo os estudos em 1854. Iniciou a sua actividade a
15 de Maio de 1855 como tesoureiro da Igreja Paroquial. Presbítero
em 26 de Julho de 1857 e a 10 de Outubro iniciou as funções de
Coadjutor. Serviu nos Doze Ribeiras e Nossa Senhora do Pilar. Voltou a Santa Bárbara
como Vigário em 16 de Novembro de 1868. Nesta freguesia e, já na situação de
aposentado, restaurou parcialmente o espólio do arquivo paroquial tendo com esse
benemérito labor apurado vários registos de batismos de gente de cor do ano 1545.
Também foi o grande dinamizador, senão mesmo o fundador, da Filarmónica Recreio
Santa Bárbara.

Father João Lourenço Rocha was born on 2 February in
the Parish of Doze Ribeiras. He studied in the Liceum of Angra do
Heroísmo, studied dogmatic theology and moral, and Ecclesiastical
History, completing his studies in 1854. He began his activity
15 May 1855 as treasurer of the Parish Church. Priest
on 26 July 1857 and on 10 October he started in the function of
Coadjutor. He served in Doze Ribeiras and Our Lady of Pilar. He returned to Santa Bárbara
as Vicar on 16 November 1868. In this village, and after his
retirement, he partially restored the estate of the parish archive having with this
meritorious work determined several baptism records of colored people in 1545.
He was also the major driving force, if not the founder of the Philharmony
of Santa Barbara.
