Gerald the Fearless

12th cenetury
Portuguese warrior and folk hero in the barren Alentejo and Extremadura regions. Évora was the most lasting of his conquests and was never retaken. The city honours him with a place on its coat-of-arms.

Description

Concrete statue of Gerald the Fearles decapitating a Moor. It stands on a hill near the place where the ruins of the castle of Giraldo are found.

Valverde - Giraldo sem Pavor

The statue was made for a feira de S. João in Évora at the 8th centennary of the taking of the city (thus 1965), stood later for a time in front of the Municipal Hall in Valverde and since c. 2012 on the present spot (the photo on Flickr, taken 12 February 2013, shows it on a rather new base).
