Description

Statue on a hexagonal base, all in Italian Carrara marble. The statue shows Columbus facing east along Eastern Avenue into the rising sun, the direction from which the explorer's vessels arrived in 1492. In his left hand he holds a rolled map, his right hand rests on a globe.

Annotation

The monument, dedicated on October 8, 1984 by then Mayor of Baltimore William Donald Schaefer and President Ronald Reagan, is a result of a city-wide fundraising campaign by the Italian American Organizations United of Maryland under the leadership of Anthony Piccinini.
