christopher columbus was born in genoa italy in 1451
by age 32 he was a master mariner in the portuguese service.
after a period of 8 years king ferdinand and queen isabella
of spain agreed to sponsor the first of 4 voyages to the
new world. on april 30, 1492 columbus was given the title
admiral of the sea and promised governor general of all
new lands he discovered. columbus sailed from palos, spain
on august 3, 1492 with 3 ships nina, pinta and santa maria
october 12, 1492 columbus landed on an island in the bahamas
known today as san salvador. sailing in october 1493 from
cdiz, the virgin islands and puerto rico where discovered. cuba
and jamaica were explored. in 1494 honduras was discovered.
on his 4th voyage in 1502 marooned in jamaica columbus was
later rescued and returned to spain. his voyages marked the
beginning of american history. the experiment of democracy
and became a symbol and haven of individual liberty for
people through out the world because of columbus vision
and courage. we are a country of greatness
