Description
The figure is of heroic size, and stands with the foot advanced, and a cross in the right hand.
Annotation
This monument is the first that rises to the Discoverer of America in South America and the second in the world. It was raised by virtue of a subscription popular and inaugurated 23 September 1877. It had been ordered in France in 1875 and his first location was in Crucero Rubio, to a flank of the Parque Italia. From 1895 it is in the present location, in Avenida Brasil and with Calle Freire. In 1892, the Italian colony placed a plate in tribute to Columbus. With the 1906 earthquake the statue fell, cutting to the head and an arm. After it, in each earthquake or strong earthquake, one becomes to give off his head. The figure represents Cristóbal Columbus, with a very conventional clothes of foot on the prow of a boat semi sunk and carrying in its right hand a sword.
